Present tense of "unassigned"?

Why is there no present tense of unassigned? We have assign and assigned, so why is unassign not a proper word when we have unassigned?

There is no present tense form for the word unassigned because it is an adjective and not a verb. So we use the word unassigned to describe a noun. We would not use it as an action.
